How to Choose a Logistics School

Some schools have designed programs for warehouse workers, in response to the high demand for education that focuses specifically on logistics. Kathleen Hedland is the director of research and education for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. She says that companies want their workers to know how they affect customers, and the ways in which actions taken content by one department can affect other areas of work.

The degrees available vary but they all include classes that introduce fundamental concepts, including operations and supply chain management procurement, transportation and distribution networks storage and inventory management, and business fundamentals. Some universities also offer specializations like e-commerce and retail logistics, transportation and logistical analysis, global logistics management, and others.

Graduates are now ready to be employed in roles such as supply chain managers and logisticians. They could also work in roles like purchasing agents as well as industrial production managers and distribution managers. They may also seek certifications such as the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to improve their career prospects.

In addition to the course offerings be sure to consider whether the university is accredited by a body like the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation which has accreditation for 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Look for a university with high student-to-teacher ratios, as it will ensure that you receive a top-quality education.

Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs which combine classroom instruction with virtual learning opportunities. This kind of format is attractive to employees with a flexible schedule and are in a position to not attend traditional classes. Some online courses can offer associate’s degrees or certificates, while other programs offer master’s and bachelor’s degrees.
